Installation & DIY

Installation and DIY for an outdoor cabinet run: levelling, bolting modules together, what a licensed trade must do, and the order that avoids a visible step.

The short answer

Cabinets arrive assembled on castors. Installation is placing, bolting, levelling and setting the top — a half day for three modules, and no carpentry.

Levelling a cabinet run — across the run, not per cabinet

A 2 mm tolerance over 3 m, and why individual cabinets can each be level and still be wrong.

Levelling

Before you read the guides

The order that avoids a visible step

These are the decisions the guides below keep returning to. Settle them roughly first; the articles then fill in the detail.

  1. Set the run out on the floor first

Mark the module sequence on the ground before anything is unpacked. A run assembled by eye ends up with the joints in the wrong place.

  2. Roll each module into position

Every module arrives on braked castors. Two people, one at each end, and nothing is lifted further than the kerb.

  3. Bolt module to module

The connecting screws pull the carcasses together. The countertop hides the seam; it does not hide a gap, so this is the step that gets checked.

  4. Level the whole run as one unit

Adjust the castors after the run is bolted, then brake them all. Levelling module by module before bolting is the mistake that shows at the top.

  5. Hand the services to a licensed trade

Gas, a new electrical circuit and the final water connection are local licensed work. The cabinet leaves the vent cut and the power point accessible.

Straight answers

Questions this section gets most

If the answer you need is not here, the enquiry form asks for the grill model and the run length and nothing else.

How many people does it take?

Two for anything 800 mm wide or larger, and a third helps on a corner module. A 400 mm module can be handled by one person.

Does the run need fixing to the wall?

No. The run is freestanding on braked castors. It is not fixed to the wall, which is also why it can be moved for cleaning.

What must a licensed trade do?

The gas connection, any new electrical circuit, and the final water and waste connection. We do not ship or arrange that work.

One field, then a configuration and a price. If your grill is one we have not cut for, we will ask for the manufacturer's drawing rather than guess at it.
