Sinks & taps

Sinks and taps outdoors: outdoor-rated mixers, drainage that does not freeze, and why the sink module is the hardest one to place in an outdoor kitchen run.

The short answer

The sink is the module that needs water in and water out. Both have to reach it, and a drain fall is not something you can adjust after the deck is built.

Outdoor kitchen sinks — plumbing, drainage and winter

Supply, waste, fall and freeze protection — the four things that decide where the sink can go.

Before you read the guides

Why the sink is the hardest module

These are the decisions the guides below keep returning to. Settle them roughly first; the articles then fill in the detail.

  1. Two runs, both needing a fall

Water in and waste out. The waste is the one that gets forgotten, and it is the one that has to leave the cabinet below the shelf line.

  2. An outdoor-rated tap

A tap that survives frost and UV, and a habit of draining it down before the first cold night. The cabinet is not the part that fails.

  3. The trap has to fit

Behind the cabinet, not under the shelf. A standard indoor trap often does not clear the honeycomb base, which is why the waste route is drawn.

  4. Freeze

Standing water in a trap splits it. Draining down in autumn costs a minute; replacing a split trap inside a fitted run costs an afternoon.

  5. Placement

Near the grill for washing up, away from the frying side so splashes and hot oil do not share a surface.

Questions this section gets most

If the answer you need is not here, the enquiry form asks for the grill model and the run length and nothing else.

Can a sink go in a module on castors?

Yes. The waste is a flexible hose taken to a local gully or a standpipe, so the module can still be rolled out for cleaning.

Does the tap come with the cabinet?

No. The top is drilled and braced for a standard 35 mm tap, and the tap is chosen locally or supplied to your specification.

What happens over winter?

Drain the trap and isolate the supply. The cabinet itself needs nothing — it is the water sitting inside the plumbing that causes damage.
