Short answer
Start an outdoor kitchen layout from circulation, not from cabinets. Two people need about 1,100 mm of clear floor to pass each other, one person working at a counter needs 900 mm behind them, and the grill needs clearance on both sides. Those three numbers set the run; the cabinets fill what is left.
The three zones
Wet, hot, and dry. Sink, grill, storage. They want to be in that order along a run, or arranged so that wet and hot do not force you to walk around each other.
On a straight run: sink nearest the door, grill in the middle, storage and gas at the far end. That is not aesthetic advice; it is the order that minimises walking with something in your hands.
How much space people need
Behind a counter, one person working needs about 900 mm of clear floor. Two people passing need about 1,100 mm. In front of an open grill lid you need the lid arc plus standing room.
This is the number that kills most small-space layouts. A 700 mm gap looks fine on a plan and is uncomfortable in use.
Why the grill comes last
The grill is the least flexible element: it has a fixed aperture, a lid arc overhead, a gas entry on one side and a heat output that dictates where it cannot go. Everything else is a box that fits wherever there is space.
So place the grill against the overheads and the gas route first, then fill outward with sink and storage. Planning from the ends inward is how a run ends up 60 mm short at the grill.
Test it with chairs
Before committing, put two chairs at the counter where you plan to sit and walk the route from the kitchen door carrying a tray. It takes five minutes and finds the conflict that a drawing hides — usually a door swing, a step, or the distance from the house.
Circulation problems cannot be fixed by buying different cabinets, which is why this comes before the cabinet list.
The four distances that decide a layout
1,000 mm behind the grill
The clear floor a cook needs to stand square to an opening lid. Below that, people stand sideways and the run feels tight.
600 mm of counter either side of the grill
Landing space for a hot tray. Without it, everything goes on the grill lid or on the floor.
400 mm between sink and grill
Close enough to carry a pan, far enough that splashes and hot oil do not share a surface.
900 mm of walkway behind an island
The minimum for one person to pass another. Below 900 mm an island stops being useful and starts being an obstacle.
1,075 mm at the corner
The plan dimension of the corner module on both legs. A layout drawn at 656 mm per leg will not fit the cabinet.
Questions we get about this
How much space do I need for a two-person kitchen?
About 900 mm behind the counter for one person working and 1,100 mm for two passing without turning sideways. Add the grill lid arc in front of the grill.
What is the minimum run length?
1.2 m for a sink only, 2.4 m for a sink and a built-in grill. Below that a countertop grill on a sink module is the honest answer.
Does the kitchen need to be near the house?
As close as the site allows. Distance from the door is the single biggest factor in how often it gets used, and it is the one thing no cabinet can fix.
