Can you put a grill on castors?

Short answer

Yes — every module in this range runs on 2.5 inch locking castors, including the grill cabinet, and that is the point of the system. The cabinet is built for it; the constraints are the gas hose route, the deck surface, and locking the wheels before the lid is opened.

The cabinet is designed for it

Grill cabinets are normally set into masonry, where the structure carries the load. A modular cabinet carries its own load through a top rail, and the castors take it to the deck. Nothing in the design assumes the ground is a slab.

This is also why a modular run can be levelled on an uneven deck. Four castors with adjusters do the job that packers and scribing do on a fixed installation.

The gas hose is the real constraint

A cylinder in a cabinet that moves is a cylinder with a flexible hose attached. That is fine as long as the hose is long enough for the movement, routed so it cannot kink at the cabinet edge, and the cylinder is restrained so it cannot tip.

The rule we apply: lock the castors before opening the lid, and never move a run with a burner lit or a cylinder connected and unclamped. That is not a product limitation; it is what happens when a gas appliance is on wheels.

Where castors are the wrong answer

On a very soft surface — gravel, loose paving, a deck with flexible boards. Castors need something to roll on. On gravel the run will settle unevenly and the modules will separate at the joints.

On a steep slope. Castors level a few millimetres, not a gradient. If the deck falls more than about 2%, build a base.

What locking castors actually give you

Two things worth having. Levelling, so a run on a 3 m deck that is 15 mm out still reads as one continuous counter. And access, so the module at the back of a run can be pulled out for cleaning or for a gas connection.

Both are things a fixed installation cannot do without taking it apart.

Five things that change once a grill is on castors

  1. The brakes, not the wheels

Every castor has a brake. Two of them braked is a cabinet that slides; four braked is a run that does not move when a lid is pushed back.

  2. The gas hose has to have slack

A fixed run can run the hose tight. A run that moves needs a loop of slack and a route that does not pinch when the module rolls 100 mm.

  3. Levelling is done once, as a run

Castors are adjusted after the modules are bolted, not before. Levelling module by module leaves a step at the joint that the counter cannot hide.

  4. The lid swing moves the centre of gravity

A lid that rolls back shifts weight behind the cabinet. On a 1,182 mm appliance bay that is the reason all four castors are braked.

  5. The floor has to be able to take it

A run carries more load per square metre than furniture. Decking boards and loose pavers need checking before anything is rolled on.

Questions we get about this

Will the castors rust?

The castors are stainless-compatible components supplied for outdoor use. The warranty on them follows the component supplier's standard, not the ten-year cabinet structure warranty — that distinction is on the quality page and we would rather you read it now.

Can I remove the castors and fix the base down?

Yes. The castor frame is a separate element and can be swapped for a fixed plinth or a kerb. Tell us at order stage — the module is built differently for a fixed base so the counter height stays at 900 mm.

Do I move the whole run or one module?

One module at a time. The modules are bolted to each other; the bolts come out, the module slides forward, and the run stays where it is.
