Design & inspiration

Design and inspiration for an outdoor kitchen: real layouts, finish pairings, and what different budgets buy in visual terms rather than in square metres.

The short answer

The three colourways change the whole character of a run: brushed stainless reads industrial, space grey reads architectural, white reads coastal. The cabinet does not change.

Brushed, space grey or white — choosing an outdoor cabinet finish

What each colourway does to a space, and when a custom colour is worth the charge.

Finish

Before you read the guides

What actually changes how a run looks

These are the decisions the guides below keep returning to. Settle them roughly first; the articles then fill in the detail.

  1. The door finish comes first

The fronts are most of the visible area. Choosing the top before the fronts is the usual order, and it is the wrong one.

  2. Keep the counter in the same family

A run reads calm when the fronts and the top belong together. Two strong finishes fighting each other reads busy at any size.

  3. Where the grill sits

Centred looks formal and symmetrical. Offset looks like a working kitchen, and it usually solves the smoke and the walkway at the same time.

  4. Handle or no handle

Every module takes either the L profile or the C profile. The sink and drawer modules use C; the rest use L. Mixing them in one run is visible.

  5. The open end

A run that stops in mid-air without a sight panel shows a carcass edge. It is the single most common visual mistake on a first outdoor kitchen.

Straight answers

Questions this section gets most

If the answer you need is not here, the enquiry form asks for the grill model and the run length and nothing else.

Are the colour cards accurate on screen?

The cards are renders of one scene repeated in several colours, so treat them as a guide. Ask for a physical swatch before ordering a custom colour.

Can I use two finishes in one run?

Yes. Standard card finishes can be combined module by module. A custom colour is mixed once and carries a one-off tinting charge.

What do customers most often change their mind about?

The colour, after seeing a swatch. Rarely the layout — the layout decisions tend to survive contact with the site.
